Master Songwriter Richard Shindell returns to his NJ roots, April 9

What makes the New York Times, which rarely gives space to folk music, acknowledge that Richard Shindell is "maybe the best" of his generation of singer/songwriters?  Or Joan Baez to say outright that he is "one of the best songwriters of this or any era"?

The answer, we think, is the power, depth, and wit of Richard's songwriting, which somehow takes on everyday events -- like a grueling rush-hour drive down Route 80 from Paterson to the Delaware Water Gap --and shows the universal themes they convey.  Richard's career has taken him from his NJ roots to his turn in the folk supergroup Cry Cry Cry to his recent life in Argentina; and all of it is grist for his masterful songwriting.

Our special guests will be the harmony trio Mad Agnes, who are making their final tour.  This will be a bittersweet visit from these old Sanctuary favorites.

So, how does Richard turn a trip down a New Jersey highway into an epic tale of frustration and redemption? Here he is, performing "Transit."

About 150 seats remain for this Saturday's concert featuring Little Feat's Acoustic Duo show.   On the one hand, that's a healthy number of remaining seats.  On the other hand, The Feat will be announcing the date today to their 70,000 followers.  So, you may want to consider purchasing in advance.  In all events, we're looking forward to a great evening with Paul and Fred.

April will then be a busy month at The Sanctuary.  On April 2, "the world's greatest little Texas swing band," The Hot Club of Cowtown, will share the stage with one of the world's greatest guitarists, Frank Vignola and his trio.  On April 9, we welcome back master songwriter Richard Shindell.  The evening will begin with harmony trio Mad Agnes, who are on their farewell tour.  On April 16, it's Americana legends The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and on April 30, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chris Hillman of The Byrds.  Seats are still available for all of these dates.
For a little morning pick-us-up, here's some classic Little Feat,  with a little added mojo from Bonnie Raitt, a scandalously young Emmylou Harris, and Sanctuary favorite Jesse Winchester
